Why do leaves change colour?

Its part of the process whereby broadleaved trees like oak, ash and beech shut down their food production for winter.

The green colours in the leaf that the tree uses to make food are broken down at the end of the  growing season and reveal the other colours like yellow and red that are there all year but just hidden.

Autumn weather does also have a big impact on how intense the autumn colours appear.
