Woodland Trust woods

Now is the perfect time to explore Britain's woodland in full bloom and teeming with wildlife.

The Woodland Trust has over 1,000 woods across the UK covering more than 20,000 hectares (50,000 acres). Why not pack up a picnic and explore your local Woodland Trust woods this summer? They are free to visit.

Great picnic woods

North West: Sea Wood, Cumbria

Wander between ancient oak trees, scramble over boulders and feel the sand between your toes on the beach at Sea Wood.

North East: Hedley Hall, Tyne and Wear

Follow the spectacular wildflower display and sculpture trail to specially carved benches for a picnic in style.

Midlands: Felicity's and Martin's Woods, Leicestershire

Martin's Wood rises above the Midlands offering stunning views across the valleys below. Neighbouring Felicity's Wood is great for pond dipping.

South East: Hucking Estate

A walk through this area of outstanding natural beauty will reveal lots of hidden archaeological gems and lots of lovely butterfly species. Which can you spot?

Henlade Wood, Somerset (WTPL/Jackie Cockeram)

South West: Henlade Wood, Somerset

A lovely peaceful getaway from the busy nearby town of Taunton, offering beautiful views across the Somerset hills. You might even spot some fossils if you're lucky.

Wales: Cwm George and Casehill Woods, Vale of Glamorgan

Escape from the nearby city of Cardiff and travel back in time as you explore the Dinas Powys ancient hill fort and monument.

Scotland: Pressmennan, East Lothian

Elusive creatures live among the big, old trees. Pressmennan's Tootflits and Glingbobs are shy creatures but if you keep your eyes peeled you may spot the tiny doors and stained glass windows of their homes...

Northern Ireland: Carnmoney Hill, Country Antrim

People may have feasted at this site for over 2,000 years, from bronze age settlers to escaping vikings and more recently Elizabeth I. Follow in their footsteps as you climb the hill.
