About this wood

Glen Sherup a 605 hectare site in Perth and Kinross. Our aim is to transform this extensive overgrazed area with little wildlife interest into a mosaic of diverse habitats rich in wildlife. On the upper slopes we are recreating a scrubby sub-montane juniper woodland which ecologists say is likely at one time to have clothed the hills The site is similar to neighbouring Glen Quey being a grassy hill formerly grazed by sheep and adds value as a result of the scale of the combined sites with footpath linkages. In particular, there are circular hill ridge walks with spectacular views, connecting the high tops in Glen Quey, via Tarmangie Hill, to Carinmorris Hill and Ben Shee within the Glen Sherup site. You may be lucky and spot black grouse, otters or red deer, all of which have been seen in the young woodland. Glen Sherup along with neighbouring Glen Quey and Geordie’s Wood form the area the Trust calls Glen Devon. A good central point for discovering the area is the forestry car park by the River Devon at the foot of Glen Sherup. Glen Sherup is however a remote and high level site and best suited to reasonably fit walkers equipped for the hills. A rare species of bumble bee was found in Glen Sherup. The blaeberry bumble bee is distinguished by its bright red-orange abdomen Glen Sherup has benefited from the Scottish Forest Alliance –a collaboration between BP, Forestry Commission Scotland, RSPB Scotland and the Woodland Trust Scotland In May 2008 a 14km waymarked Reservoirs Trail opened which links the Trust’s three sites in Glen Devon. Glen Sherup is likely to have come from the Gaelic “Sior Abh” meaning the long lasting river Gold can be found in the burns if you join with organised groups that have the skills to pan
