About this wood

Situated adjacent to Windmill Hill close to the centre of Launceston this level woodland creation site stands on locally high ground and is fairly exposed as a result. Currently the site is offered some shelter by the few semi mature hedgerow trees present and houses on three side of the wood. The developing trees will gradually provide mutual shelter that will aid future growth. It was planted in 1996 with an amenity type mixture with clumps of Scots Pine in each corner, and Downy Birch, Wild cherry, Alder Buckthorn and Dog Wood between. The wood has been subsequently interplant with some Oak and Ash which will help provide a 'climax wood'. All trees apart from the Pine established slowly and have a very varied appearance, however they are now closing canopy and the pine have formed dense clumps which are beginning to shade out the bramble and tussock grass ground flora.
