About this wood

A trip to the seaside can take on new meaning with a visit to Sea Wood. The woodland stands out against the northwest shore of Morecambe Bay and is edged by the shingle beach of Ulverston Sands. The sea played an important part in the management of the wood - large oak timbers used to be floated at high tide to ship builders in Ulverston. Today this semi-natural ancient woodland is something of a county rarity and is recognised as the largest of its kind in South Cumbria. Notable for its many old oak trees, the site is a rich broadleaf mix while the ground vegetation, denser in the northern wood, supports a host of small mammals. There is also a thriving population of small birds, blackbirds and thrushes. Look for the many types of lichen that add texture and colour to the tree trunks.

Your thoughts on this wood

"February is a great time to visit this wood as it is possible to get a really good idea of its topography, see the big boulders that it give it so much character and appreciate the standard trees at their best. "
