About this wood

Located to the south east of junction 11 on the M62, Gorse Covert and Pestfurlong Moss are sandwiched between the A574 (Birchwood Way) and Gorse Covert housing estate. Pestfurlong Moss (Sub-compartment 4) is a remnant of the lowland raised bog that formed the local landscape until the area was developed for housing in the late 1970’s. Gorse Covert Mounds is more recent, and consists of a mid 1970’s landscape project with mixed habitats, developed on spoil mounds resulting from the demolition of the Risley Royal Ordnance Factory. The mounds form a long ridge running roughly southwest to northeast.
