About this wood

You will discover Willesley Wood next to the village of Donisthorpe, in the heart of the National Forest. The wood is one of the first to evolve within Leicestershire’s former coalfield. When mining ended in 1943 the land was returned to agricultural use but its industrial heritage is never far from view, with visible relics including nearby Oakthorpe Colliery.
