About this wood

Black Plantation is situated in the uplands to the southwest of Lanchester village in Co. Durham (NZ 137 449) and was acquired by the Woodland Trust in March 1988. Covering an area of 13.83 hectares, the property is dominated by semi-mature birch growing on clayey brown earth, wet in places, along with a scattering of oak and other broadleaves and the odd Scots pine. Lying on the south bank of the River Browney, the wood occupies the gentle lower slope of the river valley and is designated a County Wildlife Site by Durham County Council.
