About this wood

Brounlie Wood is situated in the small village of Beer Hackett, a few miles southeast of Yeovil. Formerly a pig & arable farm, it is now mixed broadleaf woodland with some conifers, planted mostly in the 1960s and 70s. Principle species include oak, ash, birch and Norway spruce. Minor species include Norway maple, horse chestnut, larch, poplar, alder and willow. There are three separate ponds in the wood (C1), which were created by the previous owner in 1975 originally to contain fish. This proved unsuccessful but they still add variety and interest to the woodland and provide excellent wildlife habitats. The underlying soil is generally heavy clay. The wood is surrounded by open fields with houses over the road to the south. A public footpath runs north - south through the site and the wood is freely accessible to passing walkers. A short circular path also winds through the woodland, providing a pleasant stroll for many villagers. Management access is via the southern entrance directly off the village road.
