About this wood

Monkstown Wood, off Newtownabbey’s Monkstown Road, is a green oasis in a busy, urban area. Escape from the hustle and bustle and enjoy a stroll through this quiet corner of nature. Two kilometres of pathway will lead you on your journey through a mix of habitats, including grassland, mature woodland and recently planted woodland. You will find at least 15 species of young native trees, over 8,000 in total and including oak, cherry, hazel, ash and rowan. The Three Mile Water River meanders alongside the new woodland and winds in to meet you at certain parts of your journey.
