About this wood

Set atop a gently sloping hill overlooking the old Roman town of Ancaster and providing fine views, the aptly named High Wood is an important landscape feature in an otherwise poorly wooded area. In spring the heart of the wood is ablaze with violets, thriving beneath young oak, ash, cherry and willow trees. There are relatively few mature trees in the centre of the wood but the outer edges are fringed with mature oak, ash and sycamore.
