About this wood

Yatesbury Beeches is essentially an avenue of maturing beech trees approximately 600 metres long and 10 metres wide. They are located on the edge of the village of Yatesbury, approximately 1 mile from the A4. The beeches are c. 200 years old and therefore reaching the end of their natural life. Regular tree inspections highlight their diminishing health and over the last 20 years approximately 34 trees have been felled or pollarded. In a slightly better state are the scattering of mature Scots pine and ash. A healthy understory structure contains an abundance young beech as well as yew, field maple, sweet chestnut and ash coppice and natural regeneration. The trees were gifted to the Trust over 20 years ago by the neighbouring church and were previously threatened with clearfell on safety grounds.
