25,000 free trees being planted this spring
This spring sees school children and community groups across Wales plant over 25,000 free trees, as part of the Woodland Trust's "More Trees, More Good" campaign. As a result an area covering over 50 acres (20 ha) of trees is being planted.
513 native tree packs have been distributed across Wales enabling thousands of children and local people improve their school grounds and community spaces through tree planting.
453 schools in Wales have received 30 free tree saplings, thanks to support from WHSmith, for planting either as hedges or to create a small copse. When mature, the trees will not only provide protective shelter and shade, but also a wild harvest of fruits and nuts for wildlife and people to enjoy.
In addition 60 Welsh community groups have received a small pack of 105 trees or a large pack of 420 trees, each pack is available in four different themes: year-round colour, wood fuel, wildlife, or wild harvest, ideal for planting as hedging, small woods or copses. Species in all packs support a variety of wildlife from songbirds such as starling, blackbird, song thrush and mistle thrush. As well as animals including squirrels who thrive on nuts from the hazel tree.
Clare Morgan, the Trust’s north Wales based woodland creation manager, said "We have been overwhelmed by people's enthusiasm to plant trees. Schools and communities are transforming spaces within their neighbourhoods, growing their own fruits and food, creating shade and shelter, and providing vital new homes for wildlife. Wales is one of the the least wooded countries in Europe, so we are delighted that so many people want to help reverse this trend. Applications for free packs of trees to plant this autumn and in 2012 to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee are now open on our website at www.moretreesmoregood.org.uk/communitytrees along with lots of help and advice to get people started."
One group which has already planted its free trees is the Gwyrddio Penarth Greening Group, whose green fingered members have since been hard at work planting 420 young trees in the nearby the Community Orchard in nearby Cosmeston Lakes Park. The group chose a pack containing Blackthorn, Crab Apple, Elder that will produce a wildlife harvest and free food for people and wildlife in future years.
Anthony Slaughter, who organised the planting said: “Tree planting is a fantastic and fun way for us to do something lasting and beneficial in our local area. We hope our trees will help attract wildlife and make a real difference to everyone who will see them."
More Trees More Good
More Trees, More Good is the Trust's campaign to facilitate the planting of 20 million trees a year for the next 50 years. Two million through the Woodland Trust and 18 million through other channels.

Mae Cymru’n un o wledydd lleiaf coediog Ewrop, felly rydan ni wrth ein boddau fod cymaint o bobl eisiau plannu mwy.
