Generous supporters raise over £800,000 to bring back the oak and the ash to Snowdonia’s hidden valley

TV wildlife presenter Iolo Williams has welcomed the success of the Woodland Trust (Coed Cadw) in raising the funds necessary to buy most of Cwm Mynach, a remote valley in the Snowdonia National Park. The charity has now completed the purchase of nearly 1000 acres (400ha) (1) of this remote Snowdonia valley. The Trust’s aim is to gradually re-establish native woodland and other valuable wildlife habitats across a landscape now dominated by conifer plantation.

Welcoming the success of the campaign, Iolo Williams said: “This excellent news. Cwm Mynach is a very special place and I’ve had the pleasure of walking the valley many times over the last three decades. As a result of removing non-native trees and promoting native deciduous ones, the site should become all the better both for wildlife and for visitors. “

The previous owner shares the Woodland Trust’s vision of expanding and re-creating native woodland and other valuable wildlife habitats throughout the valley, and therefore offered to sell the land to the Trust for considerably less than the market value. In May last year the Trust launched an appeal to raise £865,000, the sum required to purchase the land, and to manage it for the first five years.

Eryl Roberts of the Woodland Trust says: “We are hugely grateful to each one of the nearly 15,000 of people  who have contributed to the appeal. Over the past few months we have been busy tying up the details of the sale and we are delighted that this process has now been successfully concluded.”

There is still, however, a small shortfall and the Trust will therefore need to continue to raise funds for the management and restoration of the site.

Eryl Roberts adds: “This is great news and a really important milestone for the valley. It signals the start of a great deal of work making detailed plans to restore the landscape of the valley. We are looking forward to working closely with our new neighbours and indeed the whole of the local community in doing this.”

Erbyn hyn, mae’r elusen wedi cwblhau pryniant y cwm, bron i 1,000 o aceri (400 ha) (1) y Eryri. Bwriad Coed Cadw yw ail-sefydlu coetir brodorol a chynefinoedd gwerthoedd eraill ar draws ardal a orchuddir gan goed conwydd yn bennaf ar hyn o bryd.

Gan groesawu llwyddiant yr ymgrych, ddywododd Iolo Williams: “Mae hyn yn newyddion bendigedig. Mae Cwm Mynach yn lle arbennig iawn a dwi wedi cael y cyfle i gerdded yn y cwm llawer gwaith dros y tri degawd diwethaf. Trwy dynnu allan y coed estron a hyrwyddo rhai collddail, mi ddylai’r safle ddod yn well i fyd natur ac ymwelwyr fel eu gilydd.”

Roedd y gwrthwr yn rhannu gweledigaeth Coed Cadw i ymestyn ac ail-greu coetir brodorol a chynefinoedd gwerthfawr eraill trwy’r cwm cyfan, a felly fe cynigiodd o werthu’r ty i Goed Cadw am lai o lawer na’i werth. Felly, fe lansiodd yr elusen apêl i godi £865,000, sef y cwm sydd ei angen i brynu’r tir a’i reoli am y pum mlynedd cyntaf.

Dywed Eryl Roberts o Goed Cadw: “Rydyn ni’n ddiolchgar tu hwnt i bob un o’r pymtheg mil o bobl, bron, sydd wedi cyfrannu at yr apêl. Dros yr misoedd diwethaf rydyn ni wedi bod yn brysur yn trafod manylion y pryniant ac rydyn ni wrth ein bodd fod y broses wedi cael ei gwblhau.”

Rydyn ni’n dal dipyn yn fyr o’r targed, a felly fe fyddwn ni’n dal i godi’r arian sydd ei angen i adfer y safle yn y dyfodol.

“Mae Eryl yn ychwangu: “Dyma newyddion gwych, ac yn garreg filltir bwysig i’r cwm. Mae’n nodi dechrau cyfnod prysur o waith yn gwneud cynlluniau manwl i adfer tirwedd y cwm. Rydyn ni’n edrych ymlaen at gydweithio’n agos efo’n cymdogion newydd ac yn wir y gymunedol leol i gyd i wneud hyn.”
