‘Trees are the answer to many of the challenges we face’, says Clive Anderson, President of the Woodland Trust, in the run-up to the Welsh Election
Coed Cadw Cymru has launched its Manifesto ‘Growing Wales’ future’ ahead of the National Assembly for Wales Elections and is urging everyone in Wales to ask their candidates what they will do, if elected, to champion the creation and protection of native woodland.
As all parties prepare to launch their manifestos, the Woodland Trust is offering timely advice and all 240 Assembly Candidates standing in the forthcoming elections in Wales have been invited to support this manifesto.
In its manifesto the Woodland Trust Wales calls on all parties to:
- Adopt a target of doubling native woodland cover in Wales over the next fifty years
- Create a National Forest Park throughout the South Wales Valleys
- Protect ancient woods and trees and their wildlife for the future
- Inspire everyone to enjoy and value woods and trees
Clive Anderson, President of the Woodland Trust says: “In so many ways, this is the age of the tree. By planting native trees we can help alleviate flooding, mitigate climate change, provide habitats for threatened wildlife and make our cities, towns and villages more pleasant to live in.
“Wales will be missing a trick if it fails to make the most of the many benefits native woodland and trees have to offer. So I would urge all candidates standing in this election to support the Woodland Trust’s manifesto.”
Angharad Evans, Campaigns Officer of the Woodland Trust said: “We often take the natural environment for granted, and it is only when it is under threat that we realise what is happening and it is too late. All too often woods and trees only have a voice when we stand up for them.”
The Trust is stressing that anyone can take part in its election campaign, even from the comfort of their own home through the simple step of visiting the website www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/elections. This will enable you to ask your election candidates to sign a commitment to work for the good of woods and trees in the next Welsh Assembly.

Yn ei maniffesto, mae Coed Cadw yn galw ar y pleidiau i:

- Ysbrydoli pawb i fwynhau ac i werthfawrogi coed a choetir
Dywed Clive Anderson, Llywydd Coed Cadw: “Dyma oes y goeden mewn cymaint o ffyrdd. Drwy blannu coed brodorol, medrwn leddfu llifogydd, newid yr hinsawdd, darparu cynefinoedd i fywyd gwyllt o dan fygythiad a gwneud ein dinasoedd, trefi a phentrefi yn llefydd mwy dymunol i fyw ynddynt.”
“Mi fydd Cymru yn colli cyfle gwych os fydd hi’n methu neud y mwyaf o’r holl fanteision sydd gan goetir a choed brodorol i’w cynnig. Rwy’n erfyn ar bob ymgeisydd sy’n sefyll yn yr etholiad yma i gefnogi maniffesto Coed Cadw.”
Dywed Angharad Evans, Swyddog Ymgyrchoedd Coed Cadw: “Rydyn ni’n aml yn cymryd yr amgylchedd naturiol yn ganiataol, ac yn anffodus dim ond pan fydd o dan fygythiad rydyn ni’n sylweddoli eu pwysigrwydd, ac erbyn hynny, mae’n rhy hwyr. Ni allwn ni osgoi pwysigrwydd coed brodorol, a dim ond pan fyddwn ni’n sefyll drostyn nhw mae gan goetir a choed lais.”
