One more push to restore the native woodland of Snowdonia’s hidden valley

Cymraeg

Local AM and Assembly Presiding Officer Dafydd Elis-Thomas sees for himself what the Woodland Trust hopes to achieve in Cwm Mynach

As Coed Cadw (the Woodland Trust) enters the final straight in its attempt to raise the funding to purchase most of Cwm Mynach, the monk’s valley, in the Snowdonia National Park, local AM Dafydd Elis Thomas has this week visted the site to see for himself what the woodland charity hopes to achieve there.

If successful, Coed Cadw aims to purchase the almost 1000 acres (around 400 ha) (1) of Cwm Mynach, between Barmouth and Dolgellau, and to re-establish native woodland and other valuable wildlife habitats across a landscape now dominated by conifer plantation. The whole project has been made possible by the fact that the site’s owner shares the Woodland Trust’s vision and has therefore agreed to sell the land to the Trust for considerably less than the market value. But to take advantage of this offer the Trust needs to raise £865,000 by the end of the year. This is the sum required to purchase the land, and to manage it for the first five years. Ownership of the site by the Woodland Trust will enable the expansion and re-creation of native woodland in the valley to be accelerated and ensure the site’s future.

With just over one month to go, generous supporters from around the country and the world have now contributed over £700,000.

Dafydd Elis-Thomas says:  ‘Coed Cadw provides a unique way of saving our natural native woodland habitat while providing excellent well-managed recreational opportunities. I lived in and around Dolgellau for twenty years and walked in Cwm Mynach often, and I look forward to doing so again’.

Eryl Roberts from Coed Cadw says: “We always realised that 2009 was going to be a very tough year to launch an appeal like this. But we recognised that the opportunity to reestablish native woodland throughout almost an entire valley was an opportunity we simply couldn’t miss. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to everyone who has contributed. The race is now on to raise the remainder of the money.”

Un hwb yn fwy i adfer coetir brodorol cwm cudd Eryri

Dafydd Elis Thomas, AC lleol a Llywydd y Cynulliad yn gweld drosto ei hun beth y mae Coed Cadw yn gobeithio ei gyflawni yng Nghwm Mynach

Wrth i Goed Cadw (the Woodland Trust) nesáu at ddiwedd yr ymgyrch i godi’r arian angenrheidiol i brynu’r rhan fwyaf o Gwm Mynach, ym Mharc Cenedlaethol Eryri, mae’r Aelod Cynulliad lleol Dafydd Elis-Thomas wedi ymweld â’r safle yr wythnos hon i weld drosto ei hun beth y mae’r elusen yn gobeithio ei gyflawni yna.

Os bydd yr ymgyrch yn llwyddiannus, mae Coed Cadw yn bwriadu prynu bron i 1000 o erwau (tua 400 ha) (1) o Gwm Mynach, rhwng Abermaw a Dolgellau, ac ail-greu coetir brodorol a chynefinoedd gwerthfawr eraill i fywyd gwyllt ar draws tirwedd sydd wedi ei orchuddio, bron, gan blanhigfeydd conwydd ar hyn o bryd. Mae’r holl brosiect yn bosibl oherwydd y ffaith fod perchennog y safle yn rhannu gweledigaeth Coed Cadw a’i fod o wedi cytuno felly i werthu’r tir am lai o lawer na’i werth. Ond er mwyn manteisio ar y cyfle yma, mae rhaid i’r elusen godi £865,000 erbyn diwedd y flwyddyn. Dyma’r swm sydd ei angen i brynu’r tir a’i reoli am y pum mlynedd gyntaf. Os bydd y safle yn perthyn i Goed Cadw fe fydd modd ymestyn ac ailgreu coetir brodorol yn y cwm yn gyflymach, yn ogystal â sicrhau ei ddyfodol.

Gyda dim ond mis ar ôl, mae cefnogwyr hael o ar hyd y wlad a’r byd wedi cyfrannu dros £700,000.

Dywed Dafydd Elis-Thomas: “Mae Coed Cadw yn cynnig ffordd unigryw i achub ein cynefin coetir naturiol wrth ddarparu cyfleoedd hamdden gwych sy'n cael eu rheoli'n dda. Roeddwn i’n byw yng nghyffiniau Dolgellau am ugain mlynedd ac mi gerddais i yng Nghwm Mynach yn aml, a dwi’n edrych ymlaen at wneud hynny eto”.

Dywed Eryl Roberts o Goed Cadw: “Roedden ni’n wastad yn sylweddoli y buasai 2009 yn flwyddyn anodd i lansio ymgyrch fel hon. Ond roedden ni’n cydnabod fod cyfle i ailsefydlu coetir brodorol trwy’r cwm cyfan, bron, yn un na allen ni mo’i golli. Rydym ni’n ddiolchgar dros ben i bawb sydd wedi cyfrannu. Mae’r ras ymlaen rwan i godi gweddill yr arian.”
