Hunting for Biodiversity in the Capital

To celebrate Wales Biodiversity Week, Coed Cadw and Cardiff Council’s Parks Service are holding a free ancient tree trail treasure hunt at Bute Park.

The event, which will take place until June 13 sees various boards with pictures of wildlife concealed amongst the ancient trees in one of Cardiff’s most historical parks.

Children can explore the hidden trail at Bute Park and learn more about wildlife and biodiversity in their pursuit whilst they fill their free sticker books with lots of pictures of the creatures they come accross.

The event, which aims to highlight the importance of biodiversity is being run as part of Coed Cadw’s “The Woodland Trust goes to Town” which is visiting all regions of the UK to celebrate the value of ancient trees. It is also part of wider celebrations of the International Year of Biodiversity centred around the National Museum which involves partners from across the environment sector in Wales.

Dr Edward Parker of Coed Cadw said: “Bute Park like many of Cardiff’s Green spaces has a wealth of amazing old trees.  These trees are home to a huge array of wildlife and this is a great opportunity to learn more about the creatures that live in the park.”

Councillor Nigel Howells, Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, said: “I'm delighted that Cardiff Council and Coed Cadw are able to celebrate International Year of Biodiversity by holding a worthwhile event for children in the heart of the city. The trail will provide children with the opportunity to get closer to nature and give them an insight into the various species of wildlife that inhabit Cardiff’s many green spaces and river corridors.”

Free special packs including sticker booklets will be available from the National Museum and Cardiff Castle’s Gift shop and the brand new Summerhouse Kiosk in Bute Park until June 13. The packs will also be available from West Lodge, Bute Park on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 12.30am to 2.30pm.
