Lancashire tops “green” school league tables for second year running

Trust reveals most environmentally aware schools across the country

The Woodland Trust can reveal that yet again Lancashire’s schools are top of the class when it comes to green activities. The Trust is publishing the second green league table to mark two years of its Green Tree Schools Award.

Lancashire’s schools came top out of 47 regions that have schools registered on the green journey. 24 schools in Lancashire have already received a gold award, which is achieved by earning 15 points through various green activities. These schools include Waddington & West Bradford CE in Clitheroe and Thornleigh Salesian College in Bolton.

The scheme, which is free to participate in and open to all, rewards schools who take part in green activities including tree planting, recycling and reducing carbon emissions. In the two years of the award scheme over 3,000 schools across the UK have signed up, including a total of 174 in Lancashire alone.

The top five UK regions in 2010 are (2009 positions in brackets):

1. (1) Lancashire

2. (7) Essex

3. (4) West Midlands

4. (9) West Yorkshire

5. (2) Surrey

Karen Letten, schools development manager said: “Positive and inspirational experience of trees and woodland at a young age is a key step towards a long term environmental commitment, particularly at a time when there is clear evidence that tree planting across the country is declining. Congratulations to schools across Lancashire who have shown a clear appetite to promote the importance of trees and woods.”

With the Woodland Trust recently launching its new "More Trees, More Good" campaign which aims to plant 20 million trees every year across the UK it is the perfect time for schools to get involved - they can even request free packs of trees to plant in school grounds.
