Over 1,500 trees planted by volunteers at George Henry Wood
Around 70 local people turned up to plant to plant 1,000 trees, along with cadets who were involved as part of their 150th anniversary celebrations.
During the week fourteen different schools from across Rutland, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire, including Cottesmore County Primary School and Exton CE Primary, took part in tree planting on the site.
Almost 350 pupils were involved, planting over 650 trees across the five days. Many schools were return visitors, having been inspired by taking part in planting events at the site in previous years.
Laura Parry, Regional Development Officer for the Trust was thrilled by the turn out: “The wood has fostered a real community spirit, from the day we were generously donated the land by the Sellers Family we have received fantastic support. The week of planting has been a great success and the children who have been planting with us will be able to return to watch their saplings grow up as they do themselves.”
George Henry Wood has been planted on continuously over the past three years with local support and by the end of 2009 when planting will have been completed almost 30,000 trees will have been planted on site, which over time will become beautiful native woodland.Notes to editors
