Wood you believe what's happening in IKEA stores?

Furniture chain spreads awareness of World Environment Day

Customers visiting IKEA stores all over the UK this week will be greeted with a wide range of 'World Environment Day' activities for the whole family to get involved in.

The international furniture store chain has teamed up with the Woodland Trust and other organisations to deliver a number of fun events, as well as awareness raising opportunities, which all have an environmental theme.

In many stores children visiting the nursery, called 'Smaland', will get the chance to plant tree seeds in little pots, which they can later plant in their garden or a local green-space.

A 'nature trail' will also be put up in many stores where children will be given 'spotter sheets' at reception and then have to find pictures of native broadleaves spread around the store.

For adults there will be a Woodland Trust stand located in store – some manned by volunteers who will be on hand to talk to them about UK woodland and the environment. Literature will also be available in store, as well as discounted Trust membership for anyone who wishes to support the charity's vital conservation work.

IKEA has been raising money for the Woodland Trust since 2007 by making a 10p donation every-time customers swipe their IKEA FAMILY cards in store.

Each 10p donation is enough to pay for the Trust to plant a square 'foot of forest' in a wood near to every IKEA store, with the ultimate goal to create 450 acres of new native UK woodland.

Woodland Trust fundraiser Janette Wickens said: "I would like to thank IKEA for making such a big commitment to promoting environmental issues for World Environment Day. I hope customers visiting the stores feel inspired by all of the activities that are taking place.

"IKEA's support through 'foot of forest' has made a huge impact on the work of the Trust, so I would also like to urge as many people as possible to sign up to the IKEA FAMILY card and then use it whenever they shop there."
