Tree planting in the UK to lock up carbon has been given a boost after the Woodland Trust’s carbon capture product won a national award.
Woodland Carbon beat off stiff competition to win Carbon Offsetting Scheme of the Year at the Green IT Awards, held at London Zoo.
The winners in each of the 21 different categories were decided by a judging panel and votes from readers of Green IT Magazine.
The judges were impressed with how the Trust enables companies to lock up their residual carbon emissions through woodland creation in this country, which was publicised in a far reaching advertising and PR campaign.
Collecting the award was Stephanie Henderson, business development manager for the Trust. She said: “We have a dedicated team who have put a huge amount of work into making sure our carbon capture product for businesses is the best on the market.
“The great thing about Woodland Carbon is that it is more than an offset and allows companies to not only lock up their emissions but also create new native woodland which will benefit communities across the UK.”
2011 has been a significant year for Woodland Carbon after the Trust went into partnership with the MOD’s Defence Infrastructure Organisation. This will lead to an initial 160 hectares of woodland being planted to lock up carbon as well as improve training areas for soldiers.
This partnership has allowed the Trust to reduce the amount it charges companies to lock up carbon from £25 a tonne to as low as £10 a tonne.
Eurocamp is one business already taking advantage of the lower carbon sequestering costs. To capture and store its holiday travel emissions, the company has agreed to fund five hectares of the project, which is expected to remove 2,000 tonnes of CO2.
