Team litter picks in wood
Staff from Calor Gas have volunteered their time to help clean up a Woodland Trust wood which has been blighted by litter.
Piles Coppice, off the A46, near Coventry, has been the scene for vandalism, fires, fly tipping and littering for many years.
In recent times two metal gates have been put up - making a huge difference to the wood, which used to have stolen cars dumped and burned out there.
However, the now thriving wood was still in need of a bit of a facelift, which has been made possible by the Trust's corporate partners Calor Gas.
Staff from the Leamington Spa based company recently visited the wood armed with bin bags and gloves to help clear the area of rubbish.
The team walked around the wood collecting plastic bags, tin cans and other trash including a rusty bicycle and various car parts, before taking it away and disposing of it properly. In all 15 sacks of rubbish were collected and removed.
Penny Pulfrey from the Woodland Trust said: "I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone at Calor Gas who took part in this litter pick. You have helped restore this wood to its former natural beauty.”
Calor Gas is supporting the Woodland Trust’s MOREwoods scheme which enables private landowners to create woods on their own land, which in turn helps the Trust’s long term vision of doubling native woodland cover in the UK.
Calor Gas is providing £250,000 over three years to the project. This year, £100,000 of Calor's investment went towards the £1 million costs of developing and delivering the project, which saw 500,000 trees planted on other people's land - 50,000 of which have been planted from Calor's contribution.
