Celebrate 10 years of Woods on your Doorstep

Dum-di-dum, di-dum, di-dum...  Anyone familiar with the theme tune to Radio 4’s long-running soap The Archers, will recognise that this August, the villagers are holding a community picnic to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Aldridge Millennium Wood and applying for free trees to plant in Ambridge.

This picnic and planting is part of a much bigger celebration - the 10th Anniversary of The Woodland Trust's 'Woods on your Doorstep' project, which helped create the Ambridge wood on-air nearly a decade before.

Through Woods on your Doorstep, local communities, The Woodland Trust, hundreds of partners and funders, all came together to plant 250 community woods - just like the Ambridge one - across England, Wales and Northern Ireland to mark the Millennium. The vision was to create a lasting tribute that would benefit people, wildlife and the environment for years to come.

A decade later this vision is becoming reality. The knee-high saplings planted in bare fields are now well above head height. Like the Archers villagers, this summer communities are celebrating the transformation of their local woods by holding events, sharing memories and applying for free trees. We would love you to join in too.

New woods for the future!

Woods on your Doorstep showed us what an incredible difference is made to communities and neighbourhoods when local people come together to create woodland.  We want more communities to experience and enjoy the benefits of planting trees, creating new woods for the next 10 years and beyond!

If you want to plant trees in your local area, you can join The Archers residents in applying for a FREE community tree pack. Packs come in a choice of 2 sizes and 4 different themes. The closing deadline for this Autumn is Thursday 30th September.

Find out more information and apply.

Celebrate your local Millennium wood with us...

You can use our map to find your nearest millennium wood - why not visit and see what a 10 year old woodland looks like. Communities are also holding local events so keep an eye out for publicity in your local area to see what's happening. If you are interested in organising an event, email us at celebrate@woodlandtrust.org.uk

If you helped create a community wood 10 years ago we would love to hear your thoughts and memories, and see your photographs. Your pictures can help us create a visual record of how these woods have developed over the years and help us inspire more communities to plant trees - you could feature on our website.
