Since he bought the Queen Anne farmhouse at Monks Farm, near Dedham, Barry has not only regained 20 hectares of its lost farmland but embarked on transforming it into an environmental portrait of grazed pasture, with new ditches and hedges.

Now, thanks to the Woodland Trust, 4,500 slender young oak, ash, alder, hornbeam and hazel saplings are gracing the Essex landscape.

Barry aims to coppice some of the trees for firewood to provide fuel for his wood burning stove at home.
