Top tips for a successful application:

	The trees must be planted by a community group or school on land that people in your area can enjoy and benefit from (not private gardens or land with no public benefit)
	Get lots of people involved – planting is a great community activity!
	Ask the permission of the landowner before applying.
	A grid reference / postcode  is needed to identify your planting site. How to find a grid reference

Important note for all applicants:

We're currently accepting applications for November 2012 but due to the increasing popularity of our free trees we may have to close earlier than the intended deadline of 31st July 2012.

 

Free trees supplied are small native saplings (approximately 20 - 40cm in height).

Each pack also contains a Royal Oak Sapling, grown from seeds gathered from Royal Estates, to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

If your application is successful, your pack will be delivered direct to a delivery address nominated by you. 

 

What do the packs look like?

Please note that protective canes and spirals are only supplied with large packs of 420 trees.

 

What species can I have in a pack?

60 hedge: Hawthorn, hazel, holly, dog rose, dogwood

60 copse: Silver birch, rowan, wild cherry

105/420 wildlife pack: Blackthorn, hawthorn, hazel, silver birch, rowan, oak

105/420 year-round colour: Hawthorn, hazel, silver birch, rowan, wild cherry, dogwood

105/420 wood fuel: Ash, silver birch, wild cherry, oak, rowan

105/420 wild harvest: Hazel, blackthorn, crab apple, elder, dog rose

Frequently Asked Questions

 

Do we have to be an official group?

Groups do not have to be formally registered. We welcome applications from many different groups ranging from allotment groups, schools, resident associations, parish councils, etc.

 

Can we apply to plant at a Woodland Trust site?

The community tree pack scheme is designed to help communities improve their local environment. As Woodland Trust sites are cared for and maintained by us, we prefer groups to select alternative areas within their community that are in need of greening.

 

Can I apply for more than one pack?

As much as we would like to be able to provide applicants with more than one pack, we only have a limited number of packs available. To give as many people as possible the chance to benefit from the scheme, we can only supply one pack to each group/location. However you are welcome to submit a second application for a different delivery season.

  

420 trees will not be enough, can we have more?

If you are intending to plant more than 1 acre then you might want to consider our MOREwoods scheme. However, you are also welcome to submit a second application for a community tree pack for a different season.

 

Can I have a mix of trees from the different themes?

Although we cannot alter the content of the packs, the four pack themes currently on offer have been designed to include complementary species for the most common planting purposes.

 

Which pack is best for hedging?

Our wild harvest pack is considered to be the best option if you want to create a hedgerow as the trees will remain quite small. The wildlife and year-round colour packs could also be used for hedging, particularly if you do not mind having some larger trees around. However, we would not recommend ordering a wood fuel pack as it is more difficult to manage the growth of the species it contains.

 

Is the wild harvest pack suitable for an orchard?

Wild harvest packs include smaller species of tree that are suitable for hedging around an orchard. As a charity we focus on native broadleaf species, so for more information on non-native fruiting trees we would suggest contacting your local garden centre.

 

Will my pack include a royal oak sapling?

In addition to the 60, 105 or 420 trees in your pack, a royal oak sapling will also be included in every pack for 2012. The royal oak has been grown from seed stock collected from royal estates such as Windsor and Sandringham.

 

Do I have to supply a grid reference?

We prefer a grid reference, but if you are unable to provide one then we will accept the postcode of your intended planting site.

 

How do I work out what the grid reference is?

How will I know if my application has been received?

You should see a confirmation message on your screen and receive a confirmation email if your application was submitted successfully. If you’re in any doubt then please contact us at: communitytrees@woodlandtrust.org.uk

 

Can I amend my application?

Please e-mail communitytrees@woodlandtrust.org.uk with details of the error you need to correct or the change that you would like to make and we will amend your application form for you.

 

What are the chances of my application being successful?

The number of packs available for each season is limited, so we do have to judge all applications on merit. However, if you meet the criteria listed on the website and have provided plenty of information on your application then you stand a good chance of being successful.

 

When will I hear whether my application has been successful?

A brief outline of the community tree pack schedule is listed under the tab to the right of the FAQ tab, titled Deadlines.

 

Why has my application been rejected?

We prefer not to have to reject applications, but if the land to be planted is not publicly accessible or you are planting under the terms of a planning condition then you would not be considered suitable for the community tree pack scheme. In addition, if you have provided too little information for us to judge your application then it might be necessary for you to reapply.

 

Can I choose a specific delivery date?

As all the orders for each listed delivery date are sent out together we are unable to cater for individual requests.

Autumn 2012 packs – The closing date is 23:59 on 31st July 2012, however due to the popularity of community tree packs as a fantastic way to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee we may have to close earlier than this.

Applicants will be contacted with a decision in September-October, with deliveries commencing week of 5th November.
