Unsure how many trees you need for your land?
Our tree calculator can help you work it out.

How to use:

Walk around your site and jot down how many strides it takes you to get from one side to the other. Don't worry if your land isn't square - either take your measurements at the widest points, or adjust your strides to try and take account of any irregular shapes. It is unlikely that every tree will be successful and you can always thin your trees back after a few years if over-crowding becomes an issue.

Enter your stride lengths into the calculator below to see how many trees you will need to create a wood, single hedge or double hedge. Press calculate to see your result.

If you are planting a hedge, saplings should be planted roughly half a metre apart. To create a double hedge, make sure you have 3 strides width.

Please note:

This calculator is intended to give you a approximation of how many trees you will need. It assumes you are planting right up to the edge of your land, so if you want to leave a border around your trees please remove this from the stride lengths.

If you are planting a larger area of land (over an acre) we recommend you read our page on stocking and spacing trees. This calculator will not take account of any paths or rides you may want to create.
