How to find a grid reference

If you are applying for a Woodland Trust community tree pack, providing a grid reference for your planting site is vital for your application to be considered.

How to find a grid reference?

Visit the ordnance survey website to look online at your planting site and identify the grid reference http://getamap.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/getamap/frames.htm

When the website has loaded:
1) Search for your local area using place name or postcode.

2) Zoom in until you can clearly see the area you have identified for tree planting on your screen. Select the 're-centre' option and then click the centre of the intended planting area to ensure it is in the middle of your screen.

3) Once you have found your chosen location, look just below the map to see the 'grid reference at centre' information. There will be two letters followed by six numbers (8 characters in total i.e. SK905356). Northern Ireland grid references begin with a single letter (i.e. J338780)

Why do I need to provide a grid reference?

If you are applying for one of our free community packs, a grid reference or postcode is critical. This enables us to check where you are intending to plant your trees and make sure that the land you have identified is suitable for planting (for example, checking that you have not chosen a protected habitat or site of archaeological interest).

This information is also required by our funders, and forms the basis of our on-going monitoring and evaluation programme. We care about our trees and want them to succeed - if we do not know where you propose to plant them, it would be irresponsible of us to provide them.
