Step 5: Care and maintenance

You can try and minimise tree losses by planning in maintenance at the design stage. The first five years are crucial - this is when your saplings are at their most vulnerable through competition for light, nutrients and water, as well as providing a meal for animals! After this time the canopy will shade the ground, reducing competition from other plants and the trees will become less susceptible to pests.

Trees die for many reasons - poor nursery stock, root damage before or during planting, through drought or pest damage for example. You need to decide what percentage loss you are willing to accept before replacing trees. If you have gained funding for your scheme there may be limits agreed within a contract. Replacing trees that have died in the first few years after planting is called “Beating Up” and this can be built into a five-year creation and maintenance contract as a percentage replacement per year. This encourages the contractor or whoever plants the trees to do a good job and ensure they are well maintained.

If you are planting on someone else's land, make sure you have agreed the short and long term care of trees with the landowner as part of your contract.
