Planting trees in partnership

If your organisation owns or manages a significant amount of land our dedicated Partnerships team can work with you to create a tree planting project to directly benefit your organisation. We are also keen to work with those that influence other landowners - whether they are your suppliers, customers, or colleagues.

The team is already working with national organisations in the public and private sector on significant planting projects that will provide a broad range of benefits.

We can assist with specialist advice on:

woodland creation - species and planting advice

quantifying the organisational benefits of tree planting

sourcing and applying for funding

communications

and engaging the people that matter to you most – whether that’s your staff, customers or others.

A key partnership project that is already underway involves tree planting on military training land with Defence Infrastructure Organisation - see case study below.

Why work with us?

The Partnerships team builds on the Trust's excellent track record of successful, award-winning, environmental partnerships with companies. We have a team of Partnerships Managers who are available to meet with organisations and help devise bespoke projects.

We can provide:

Help with assessing the opportunity to plant trees on your land
Guidance on the species of trees and the planting plan that will meet your organisation's objectives, for example if you are planting to provide wood fuel or in order to improve the sustainability of your estate
Assistance in calculating the likely benefits for your organisation from planting trees
Advice on sourcing funding for the tree planting project and potentially finding that funding jointly through our Woodland Carbon scheme, setting up a fundraising scheme or external grants
Communications and people engagement expertise - whether promoting the project to the national press or to your colleagues, customers or local community

We have experience of working with a great variety of organisations - large public sector organisations, commerical companies in a variety of sectors, and charities.

Improving the Defence training estate

A major national partnership with the country's second largest landowner

Our partnership with Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) is based on its need to ensure the UK’s Armed Forces have the best possible training areas to equip them for military operations. By working with us, DIO is finding it can improve its training facilities at no extra cost, while the Trust is excited to be working with the second largest land owner in the UK as part of our aim to double native woodland cover in the UK by 2050.

We are currently working with DIO to identify the most suitable sites for planting - an initial scoping study identified 25,000 hectares with potential for woodland creation. Once these have been located we will be providing planting and funding advice to enable planting to get underway.

A pilot scheme between the WT and DIO at the Defence Training Estate (DTE) range at Warcop in Cumbria is already proving successful.

An initial 160 hectares of native woodland will be planted by the end of 2012 on this site, which is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty covering approximately 24,000 acres (9,715 hectares).

This has been made possible by financial support from the North Pennines AONB Partnership’s Living North Pennines project and several corporate supporters of the WT’s Woodland Carbon scheme (Waitrose and Eurocamp).
