Calor supports MOREwoods

The Woodland Trust has worked successfully with a number of partners from the public sector and business community; improving landscapes and quality of life for local people.

Essex County Council has blazed a trail within the public sector with its Essex Works programme, prompted by a tax payers vote, with a pledge to plant 250,000 trees to enhance ecology and improve residents’ quality of life.

Working with the Trust and a range of partners including district  and parish councils, 421,00 trees were planted in 2008/09 – far exceeding the original target and attracting additional funding. It has led to a renaissance in community volunteering – with 50,000 people helping plant trees – and  contributed to the county Biodiversity Action Plan.

As part of Essex Works, the Trust also helped plant trees with private landowners and continues to work with the authority on its ‘Living Landscapes Scheme’ to plant  more trees and increase biodiversity.

South Hams District Council in Devon has now launched a pilot programme with the Trust, using funding from a  planning gain / Section 106 agreement attached to planning permission for the new £400m Centrica-operated power station at Langage near South Hams – due to start generating this year.

Landowners within 10 kilometres of Langage can apply for funding to create new native woodland, providing their proposals either a) reduce the visual impact of the power station b) deliver some community benefit or c) help the area adapt to climate change by linking biodiversity areas.

Northern Ireland quarries are undergoing a green facelift, thanks to the Trust’s new woodland creation scheme - working alongside Forest Service.

Quarrying company Tarmac is the first to benefit, with the recent planting of 10.5 hectares (26 acres) of new native woodland at its Craigantlet quarry, near Newtownards.

Over 5,000 young trees have been planted, linking the pockets of existing woodland around the quarry and providing an extended haunt for a variety of wildlife.

.. and Calor.  As part of Calor’s commitment to the rural environment,  it is working with the Trust to enhance rural communities through tree planting - the Trust's  first corporate partner for MOREwoods.

The company’s funding  - a minimum commitment of £250K over three years towards the development and delivery of MOREwoods  - is helping thousands of trees to be planted throughout the UK, enhancing communities everywhere.
