Prefers moist free draining soil in full sun or partial shade. Frost-resistant, it is good for growing in the North. James Grieves is recommended by the RHS as a nectar source for bees. Planting another apple pollinator close by will maximise yield. The name comes from the use of the twigs as spindles for spinning raw wool around. Best planted in sun or semi-shade, it is In season from mid-August through to October, although the nuts can be kept until Christmas. The tree has large rounded heart-shaped leaves with attractive yellow catkins from January to March. Highly attractive to squirrels, they can clear a bush of cobnuts in a very short time! Self-fertile, the small white flowers in spring are popular with insects, whilst the fruits are enjoyed by birds, mammals and people. A reliable cropper and a hardy, disease-resistant tree, the plums are particularly good for cooking as jams and desserts. The fruit can be cooked, canned, frozen and used in pies as well as eaten as a dessert cherry. With beautiful white spring blossom, this tree can be left to grow freestanding or fan trained against a fence or wall. Netting will be required to stop the birds eating the cherries first! Small birds are attracted by the abundant seeds and aphids. Silver and downy birch are native. The hard timber, pale in colour is difficult to work but still used for small items such as piano hammers and the centres of chopping blocks. The timber also makes good firewood. Hornbeam can be easily trained as a hedging tree and is tolerant to pollution. The crushed berries can stain carpets and clothes so trees are best planted away from paths. Delicate in some respects, liking full sun and deep loam soils, but will repay care. Yew timber is rich orange-brown in colour, exceptionally strong and durable; allowing old trees to remain standing even with hollow trunks. The fine dense foliage lends itself to hedges and topiary. A freestanding tree will become a dominant feature in a garden. The fleshy fruit is enjoyed by birds and dormice, but be careful - the bark, foliage and seeds of the yew are toxic to humans and most animals.
