Stansted airport expansion

BAA, Stansted's owners want to build a new runway to the east of the existing runway at Stansted Airport. The Woodland Trust has been extremely concerned about proposals to expand Stansted Airport for many years.

We will be putting up witnesses at the public inquiry into BAA's plans for a second runway which is due to start in April. We are currently working with our legal team and ecological specialists to prepare our submissions.

An independent review of the Environmental Impact Assessment information submitted by the applicants relating to ancient woodland issues has brought to light inaccuracies and inconsistencies in the document. It has also resulted in our identifying that there are now six blocks of ancient woodland that will be directly affected by the proposal bringing a potential loss of 19.3 ha of ancient woodland.

We are also supporting Stop Stansted Expansion's appeal against the decision to allow an increase in the cap on passenger numbers at the airport as this could open the door to the new runway.
