Quarry threatens ancient woodland

UPDATE June 2010

Good news, application withdrawn!

The application was recommend for refusal by the Vale of Glamorgan Planning Authority and was due to go to planning committee for a final decision at the end of June. Before this could happen the applicant withdrew the application - presumably to prevent a permission refusal being filed against the site.

We will be watching to see if and in what form the application is resubmitted in. Watch this space!

UPDATE December 2009

Thank you to all who took time to register their objection. The Vale of Glamorgan Planning Authority is now reviewing all of the objections received and have asked the applicant for some further information.

As soon as we know more we will let you know.

Background

Coed Cadw (the Woodland Trust) woods Cwm George and Case Hill Woods are threatened by the expansion of an existing limestone quarry.

We have concerns over these plans as they result in the new quarry boundary being substantially closer to Coed Cwn George and Casehill Wood (Woodland Trust wood) and within 10 metres of the edge of Coed Cwm Slade which is ancient woodland.

Coed Cadw has already fought this threat and were sucessful when Cemex withdrew their original application. However a new application has now been submitted which still impacts on ancient woodland.

Whilst in their new application Cemex have avoided direct loss of ancient woodland they have failed to look at the impacts that a quarry adjacent to woodland might have.
