The Woodland Trust hopes that increasing woodland cover can be implemented as a shared aspiration for the new government.
We believe that creating new woods and planting trees can tackle contemporary challenges such as climate change mitigation and adaptation, wildlife loss and enhancing public health.
Thank you to everyone who took the time before the general election to invite their local candidates to support our manifesto. 16,934 individual actions were taken during the 10 week campaigning period - that's the biggest response to a call to action we have ever received!
You have certainly made a difference - the Coalition's Joint Programme promises a national tree planting campaign and it has already scrapped plans for development that made up two of our most high-profile threats to ancient woodlands and trees. Read more here.
With your help we now have a strong list of new MPs to share our vision with and to lobby in the new Parliament, from over 850 prospective candidates who signed our Candidates' Commitment. We will be inviting these new MPs to view our estate and help them understand first hand how woods and trees provide such good value for money in these times of economic uncertainty. And we will be holding them to account on their pledge.
