What you say about restoring woodland

Thousands of responses were sent to the Forestry Panel's 'call for views' using our electronic form.

Here is a tiny snapshot of just some of the suggestions, opinions and experiences that you shared...

"Having woodlands and forests creates jobs - from rangers to educators to pollarders to gardeners - just in conservation and restoration so many jobs are created."

"My vision for the future of England's forests and woods is for fewer blanket conifer plantations in sensitive areas, although I do realise that trees provide a valuable crop and employment. It's striking the balance."

"A practical solution would be to restore ALL ancient woodland sites that have been felled in the past, while they still retain the seedbank of the diverse flora that once flourished there."

"The more restored woodlands and preserved or conserved woodlands we can have, the better."

"We have an obligation to conserve the remaining biodiversity in the landscape... Projects focused on the restoration of ASNW (ancient semi natural woodland), PAWS (Planted Ancient Woodland Sites) and areas of land adjacent to plantations could offer courses or work placements to the unemployed or those with health needs preventing them from other work."

"My vision includes a large scale PPP investment program  that would develop and apply a conversion system of silvicultural management to many areas of FC land, in a move away from large Sitka, Norway Spruce plantations to be replanted with native broadleaved species."

"Commercial conifer plantations are barren; deciduous trees can also be harvested, but also help wildlife to flourish."

"My vision is for the gradual replacement of conifer monocultures based on maximising returns from timber sales by creation of more diverse woodlands."

"A challenge is to have less of the dead hand of conifers at least in some areas nearer populations."

"I would like to suggest that where conifer crops reach maturity, they are replaced with native species of tree to help rejuvenate and restore our natural woodland, rather than being replaced with more conifers, which are turning our forests into bland plantations with acidic soil."

"You should take the opportunity to restore areas of ancient woodland and reduce the loss of flora and fauna for ever."
