We want to see loopholes in protection measures closed.
The Government's recent proposals to sell the forest estate cast a harsh spotlight on the serious protection loopholes we find all the time that affect all woods, especially vulnerable and ancient woods.
Existing protection measures do not ensure that precious, fragile ancient woods are safe.
We need to stop the rot that's taken hold in current woodland protection channels:
- Every day, the Trust challenges development applications on both private and publicly owned land which threaten ancient woodland.
- Over the last ten years 900 ancient woods - an area equivalent to the City of Birmingham - have been placed at risk of destruction and damage through the planning system.
- Loopholes in current measures makes protecting ancient woodland a decision based on personal judgements not intrinsic merit.
