In England and Wales – a quarter of a million people helped support the creation of 200 new woods for the Woodland Trust's Woods on your Doorstep (WOYD) project (many placed to expand existing ancient woodland areas) covering over 930 hectares (2297 acres). There were over 64 urban woods, three within the M25, plus five woods within the National Forest and 11 in Devon.
As well as the woods, a number of new ponds, marshes and meadows and hedgerows were also established. Many of the woods featured innovative sculptures and the woodland names that local people came up with were very inventive, one being ‘Wantley Dragon Wood’ and another ‘Hoggs Kiss Wood’. The Aldridge Millennium Wood in Ambridge even featured in The Archers, on BBC Radio 4.
