Woodland Art Gallery

Schools in West Lothian have been exploring their local Woodland Trust Scotland wood, to discover what uses the wood and how animals, plants and insects compete for their own bit of greenspace.

Each class discovered that trees compete for space for their roots below ground and by using mirrors they looked at the canopy and how leaves in the branches compete for sunlight. Birds, squirrels and insects were spotted competing for space and food. Sense of smell (as some animals might do) gained a different perspective on woodland life. Magnifiers helped find evidence of tiny plants, insects and other creatures that lived on the woodland floor.

Finally each child drew a sketch of one thing they had observed during their visit.  This sketch was the starting point for further art work, using natural drawing materials of charcoal (wood) and chalk (rock) they produced a larger representation of their sketched image.  From each class a selection of pictures were chosen to turn into a wooden sculpture which will be sited in Livingston woods in 2012.
