Scotland Director

Department: Woodland Operations

Reporting to: UK Operations Director

Line Manage: Senior Scotland Staff including Operations Manager, Senior Woodland Creation Adviser and Policy and Communications Manager.

Location: Woodland Trust Perth office - Scotland

Position: Full-time permanent role - 37.5 hours per week

Summary of Job:

To lead the Woodland Trust in Scotland. The Woodland Trust Scotland Director is the senior representative of the trust in Scotland. They are expected to lead a diverse team and head our drive to double native woodland cover in Scotland

Duties:

1. To provide effective and inspirational leadership for the Woodland Trust in Scotland.
2. Represent and promote the work of the trust to high level partners, funders, stakeholders and the public.
3. To manage individual staff performance and provide them with support and development.
4. To be responsible for the implementation of our strategic plan in Scotland and ensure that the trust is able to take advantage of the unique opportunites provided in Scotland and that our business in Scotland is aligned with our UK plans
5. To provide a strategic overview of the trust in Scotland and work closely with the Management team and senior staff throughout the UK and especially at our Head office in Grantham
6. To help develop new and innovative projects that ensure we deliver our aspirations in Scotland, especially in our drive to double native woodland cover.


Skills/Experience Required:


Essential

  • A strong leader - able to inspire, enthuse and motivate people to make a major difference achieving challenging goals by improving performance and capability.
  • Relationship management - you will have an exceptional ability to network and be comfortable developing relationships with a wide variety of individuals and organisations.
  • A track record of achievenment - you will have worked with, developed and managed multi-disciplinary complex teams and will be accustomed to working in complex management structure.
  • Communication - excellent communication skills, both verbal and written with the confidence to represent the trust both internally and externally including to the media, in a professional, competent and positive manner
  • Commercially aware - you will be able to deliver good value for money from all operations and understand the need to balance the organisational benefits of operations against the costs of their delivery. You will be able to act with initiative and identify opportunities that will deliver trust aims cost effectively.
  • Professional - self-motivated, flexible and well organised, you will be able to demonstrate experience of excellent planning, meeting targets to tight deadlines for internal and external customers. You will have a ‘can do’ positive approach.
  • Self aware - you will be able to demonstrate a willingness to develop your own skills and help develop those around you.
  • Collaborative - you will demonstrate the ability to work across multiple teams with a variety of skills across a large complex organisation.
  • Results focused - you will be able to prioritise and act with tenacity, determination and enthusiasm to achieve targets.
  • Innovative - you will be able to use your own innovation, making sound decisions and able to create and deliver new ideas that further the trust's strategic priorities. You will translate creative ideas into action and reality.
  • A full driving licence and ability to undertake travel across a wide area, sometimes to remote locations. Overnight stays will be required. In addition you will be expected to attend meetings in Grantham which may be at least once per month.

 Desired:

  • IT literate,
  • An excellent understanding of national and regional environment and land use policies
  • Management or leadership training at a senior level
  • Experience of working at a senior level in the environmental, business or voluntary sectors.

This post will ideally be based at the Woodland Trust Scotland office in Perth.
