Head of Woodland Creation

Department: Woodland Operations

Salary: £40,000 - £50,000 per annum

Location: Grantham

Hours of Work: Full-time - 37.5 hours per week

Reporting To: Operations Director

Summary of Job:

To lead and drive forward The Trust’s ambitious woodland creation aspirations beyond its own estate. To be our woodland creation champion; inspiring, coordinating and ensuring delivery of a variety of woodland creation initiatives across the Trust.


Duties:      

  • Leading and inspiring the trust to deliver its woodland creation aspirations
  • Developing a newly created team at Head Office whose key roles will be to...
    - Develop, test and launch new fundable and innovative ideas that will deliver more new woodlands on land outside trust ownership
    - Project manage the delivery and coordination of existing new ideas such as our ‘Morewoods’ project which is projected to deliver 500 ha of new woodland in 2010
    - Promoting new ideas both within and outside the Trust
  • Coordinating our woodland creation activities across a variety of trust-wide functions including operations, public affairs, communications and public engagement and ensuring that the Woodland Creation element of our strategic plan is delivered at a UK level
  • To promote woodland creation to a variety of audiences and through a variety of means especially the media and web. In particular drive woodland creation enquiries up so that we can develop new opportunities to plant
  • To work with, but not directly manage, our newly created woodland creation partnership and advisory teams and in particular ensure that opportunities are developed, maintained and delivered
  • Ensuring effective communication on woodland creation issues throughout the Trust
  • To be the key source of information on all issues relating to woodland creation outside our estate
  • To provide reports for Management team and Board as appropriate


Qualities Required:

  • An Inspirational leader you will have the ability to persuade both those outside and inside the trust giving reasoned arguments to deliver more woodland creation.
  • An excellent networker with an ability to work in a matrix structure where delivery will be through others rather than necessarily those you directly line manage
  • Proven communicator with excellent verbal and communication skills and an ability to adapt your style to meet the needs of the audience.
  • An excellent strategic thinker able to input to Board level when required
  • Excellent team working skills with an ability to work collaboratively with a diverse team. Understanding of the requirements for team building and development
  • A flexible approach and used to working with a variety of groups and individuals adapting your style accordingly
  • An excellent planner who is able to prioritise for themselves and others
  • An energetic self starter used to promoting their ideas and projects

Experience Required:

  • Proven experience in leading complex initiatives across a number of teams in a large or medium sized business
  • Demonstrated ability to lead organisation wide change in a complex business
  • Capable of bridging the gap between forestry, marketing and communication skills
  • An experienced manager you will be able to set stiff targets and hold people to account, both those who you manage and those who you need to influence

Knowledge required:

  • An understanding of land based issues
