Landfill Tax

What is Landfill Tax?

Landfill Tax was introduced by the UK Government  in 1996 and was our first environmental tax. It was seen as a key tool to enable the UK to meet the targets set out in the Landfill Directive for the landfilling of biodegradable waste.

The way it works is that, for every tonne of waste that goes to landfill, landfill operators have to pay a significant sum of tax to the UK Government.

However, a percentage of this tax can be offset and used for community and environmental projects, through Landfill Tax Credit schemes like Woodland Gems and the Landfill Communities Fund. With your help, we can unlock this funding to help care for and create woods.
