Princess Anne launches Woodland Trust’s Jubilee Woods project
HRH The Princess Royal has launched the Jubilee Woods Project, one of the most prestigious programmes ever undertaken by the Woodland Trust. The leading woodland conservation charity is offering people the gem of a chance to be at the heart of the Queen's 2012 Diamond Jubilee celebrations, by planting trees to celebrate the Queen's 60 years on the throne.
The project, which has the Queen’s support and HRH The Princess Royal as patron, aims to plant six million trees across the UK and involve millions of people.
To mark the launch the Princess Royal will be planting a tree and placing a personal letter of support in a specially designed Jubilee Woods time capsule. A competition will be launched later in the year for the public to be part of history by adding their personal story of life in 2012 Britain to the time capsule.
Jerry Langford, the Woodland Trust’s Director for Wales, said: "We are absolutely delighted that the Princess Royal has agreed to be patron of Jubilee Woods. We very much hope that people across the UK will want to join us in paying a very special tribute to the Queen, while at the same time creating something living and lasting to hand on to future generations. It’s a great way to celebrate the Jubilee but also it’s a chance to make your mark on Britain’s future.”
At the pinnacle of the project will be 60 special Diamond Woods - each of 60 acres - with hundreds of smaller Jubilee Woods also being created. The Woodland Trust will be providing thousands of free Jubilee Tree packs to communities and schools across the UK. The tree planting will take place from autumn 2011 until the close of 2012, involving a planned ten per cent of the population. The Woodland Trust is now looking for landowners, of all kinds, to plant a Diamond or Jubilee Wood on their own land.
Jerry Langford, continued: "We can only make this exciting and ambitious project successful with everyone’s help. We want to give people the chance to plant trees and we’re appealing to our supporters; individuals, organisations and businesses, to help make this happen."
It is not just about marking the Queen’s Jubilee, planting woods will help create valuable habitats for some of the nations endangered species. Research by the Woodland Trust has shown that new woodland provides habitats for several red listed bird species and is a valuable tool for promoting diversity in the UK.
Woodland protection and safeguarding comes hand in hand with woodland creation, protecting what precious woodland we have, whilst creating more for the future. The recent debate in England concerning the Government’s plans to sell of publically owned forests there has shown just how strongly people feel about woodlands and trees. The Jubilee Woods project gives everybody the chance to do something to so something about this by creating a lasting woodland legacy.
The Project will commemorate the 2012 Diamond Jubilee, marking Queen Elizabeth II's 60th year as monarch. Next to Queen Victoria in 1897, she is the only British sovereign ever to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee.
Jubilee Woods is part of the Trust's 'More Trees, More Good' campaign, launched last year, which aims to transform the UK's landscape within a generation through the doubling of native woodland cover in this country - already one of the lowest in Europe - over the next 50 years. The Trust now offers a range of activities to inspire, support and enable organisations, schools, community groups and individuals to plant trees.

Helpwch i ddathlu Jiwbilî’r Frenhines gyda choed - yng Nghymru
Y Dywysoges Anne yn lansio prosiect Coedydd y Jiwbilî
Mae Ei Uchelder Brenhinol y Dywysoges Frenhinol wedi lansio Prosiect Coedydd y Jiwbilî, sef un o raglenni mwyaf ei bri a drefnwyd erioed gan Goed Cadw (the Woodland Trust). Mae elusen gwarchod coetir yn cynnig cyfle gwych i fod wrth galon dathliadau Jiwbilî’r Frenhines yn 2012, a hynny trwy blannu coed i ddathlu 60 mlynedd y Frenhines ar yr orsedd.
Mae’r prosiect yn cael ei gefnogi gan y Frenhines ac mae Ei Uchelder Brenhinol y Dywysoges Frenhinol yn noddwraig iddo. Y bwriad yw plannu chwe miliwn o goed ar draws y DU ac annog miliwn o bobl i gymryd rhan.
I nodi lansiad y prosiect fe fydd y Dywysoges Frenhinol yn plannu coeden ac yn rhoi llythyr o gefnogaeth bersonol mewn capsiwl amser a ddyluniwyd yn arbennig at y pwrpas. Nes ymlaen yn y flwyddyn fe gaiff cystadleuaeth ei lansio fydd yn galluogi’r cyhoedd i fod yn rhan o hanes trwy ychwanegu eu stori bersonol am fywyd yng Ngwledydd Prydain yn 2012.
Dywed Jerry Langford, Cyfarwyddwr Coed Cadw yng Nghymru: “Rydym wrth ein bodd fod y Dywysoges Frenhinol wedi cytuno i fod yn noddwraig Coedydd y Jiwbilî. Gobeithio’n fawr y bydd pobl ar draws y DU eisiau ymuno â ni i dalu teyrnged arbennig i’r Frenhines, wrth greu rhywbeth byw a pharhaol i’w basio ymlaen at genedlaethau a ddêl. Mae’n ffordd wych i ddathlu’r Jiwbilî ond mae e hefyd yn gyfle i adael marc ar wyneb y wlad.”
Ar frig y prosiect y bydd 60 o goedlannau Deimwnt - pob un ohonyn nhw’n 60 erw - gyda channoedd o goedlannau Jiwbilî llai yn cael eu creu hefyd. Fe fydd Coed Cadw’n gynnig miloedd o becynnau o goed Jiwbilî i’w plannu i gymunedau ac ysgolion ar draws y DU. Fe fydd y plannu’n dechrau yn ystod hydref 2011 ac yn parhau tan ddiwedd 2012. Gobeithio y bydd 10 y cant o’r boblogaeth yn cymryd rhan. Mae Coed Cadw’n edrych am dirfeddianwyr o bob math bellach, i blannu coedlannau Deimwnt a Jiwbilî ar eu tir eu hunain.
Mae Jerry Langford yn ychwanegu: “Yr unig ffordd i sicrhau y bydd y prosiect uchelgeisiol a chyffrous yma’n llwyddo ydi sicrhau fod pawb yn helpu. Rydyn ni eisiau rhoi cyfle i bobl blannu coed ac rydyn ni’n erfyn ar ein cefnogwyr ni, unigolion, mudiadau a busnesau i helpu gwneud i hyn ddigwydd. "
Yn ogystal â dathlu Jiwbilî’r Frenhines, fe fydd plannu’r coedlannau hyn yn helpu creu cynefinoedd gwerthfawr i rai o rywogaethau sydd o dan fygythiad. Mae ymchwil gan Goed Cadw’n dangos fod coetir newydd yn cynnig cynefinoedd i nifer o rywogaethau o adar a restrir yn y llyfr coch, a bod hwn yn cynyddu bioamrywiaeth trwy’r wlad.
Mae diogelu a gwarchod coetir yn mynd law yn llaw gyda chreu coetir newydd, gan amddiffyn yr hyn sydd gennym wrth greu rhagor at y dyfodol. Mae’r drafodaeth ddiweddar yn Lloegr am gynlluniau’r Llywodraeth i werthu fforestyddyhoeddus yn dangos pa mor gryf y mae pobl yn teimlo am goetir a choed. Mae prosiect Coed y Jiwbilî yn cynnig cyfle i bawb wneud rhywbeth am hyn trwy greu etifeddiaeth barhaol at y dyfodol.
Fe fydd y prosiect yn dathlu’r Jiwbilî Ddeimwnt yn 2012, gan nodi 60fed flwyddyn y Frenhines yn teyrnasu. Ynghyd â’r Frenhines Victoria yn 1897, hi yw’r unig frenin neu frenhines Brydeinig i ddathlu Jiwbilî Ddeimwnt.
Mae Coedydd y Jiwbilî yn rhan o ymgyrch Coed Cadw ‘Trwy Wydd Ddaw Bydd’, a lansiwyd y llynedd, gyda’r bwriad o drawsnewid tirwedd Gwledydd Prydain o fewn cenhedlaeth trwy ddyblu maint y coetir brodorol yn y wlad. Mae Cymru, a Phrydain, ymysg gwledydd lleiaf coediog Ewrop. Mae Coed Cadw’n cynnig amrywiaeth o weithgareddau i ysbrydoli, cefnogi a galluogi mudiadau, ysgolion, grwpiau cymunedol ac unigolion i blannu coed.
